“Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people get together to eat” – Guy Fieri

When you’re on a trip, you necessarily need to taste the local food. But it is always better to taste the local food in a restaurant which has good vibes.

This is the reason why I’m going to tell you about Hartwood, a fancy restaurant located in Tulum. Eric Werner and his wife Mya Henry opened this restaurant back in 2010 after leaving their jobs as a chef and PR-er in New York.

Hartwood owes its success to the fact that their way to cook with fresh and seasonal products: they travel hours into the interior of the Yucatan to markets and farms where they collect ingredients that allow them to offer their customer a new and exciting taste of the Mayan community. Their menu changes every day and the must is that they cook everything by wood fire!! The restaurant has no electricity and everything on the menu is either mashed, grilled, pounded or otherwise prepared by hand.

The restaurant and its kitchen are on an opened air. While I was sitting, and waiting for my plate, I could watch the chief and its cooks working on their meal and it was amazing because none of them wasn’t smiling! This restaurant is amazing because it is situated in the heart of the jungle which allows you to disconnect from your daily life!

WARNING: if you want to eat there be sure to make a reservation because this place is always full!
